34 weeks, 3 days pregnant
I'm feeling better today. Still a bit congested, but definitely better. I'm starting to feel more aches and pains though, with my back and my pelvis. It's really starting to weigh on me. It's a bit difficult to sleep especially -- I've been waking up with terrible pain in my hips (sciatica maybe?) and sometimes it goes all the way down to my ankles. It's horrible! I just keep reminding myself - just 5 1/2 weeks to go!

Happy Thanksgiving... Part 2
34 weeks, 1 day pregnant
Every year the day after Thanksgiving, we have our Thanksgiving Part II at our apartment. Blanca comes over and makes the traditional Granja family Thanksgiving (which is amazing Mrs. G!!!) that Jorge and Blanca used to have growing up. It is soooooo good!
Blanca came over early in the morning and she and Jorge prepared everything. I was still feeling congested and a bit run-down, but by the time our guests arrived for lunch I was feeling a bit better. The food came out spectacularly! What a feast!! We all just gobbled it up! Many thanks to Blanca and Jorge for preparing it all! :)
Jorge has been taking care of me (even more than usual!) these last few days and that's really helped. I'm so thankful to have him! I feel like I'm on the upswing of this cold and I really think it's thanks to his TLC! :)

Happy Thanksgiving... Part 1
34 weeks pregnant
These last few days have been a bit rough. On Saturday night I started feeling a dry and scratchy throat, which I thought was my allergies. But it turned into a terrible sore throat that lasted all the way until Monday. I even had to call in sick on Monday. Tuesday I already had a doctor's appointment scheduled so I waited until then to get it checked out - but of course I was already feeling better. (Doesn't it always happen that way?) She did a throat culture just in case and just told me to continue to get some rest. I figured that I was already getting better. But yesterday I started getting a runny nose and now today I'm all congested and I'm convinced I have a full-blown cold. :( ARGGG!!! I've been doing everything to make sure I don't get sick - I stay away from people, I wipe everything with disinfecting wipes, I use a napkin to touch doors or knobs or elevator buttons... I'm being extra careful! After careful consideration and lots of research, Jorge and I had decided it was best that I didn't take the flu shot or the H1N1 shot. (Mostly because I've never had the flu shot before and I don't know how I'd react to it. Last thing I want to do is experiment while I'm pregnant. And the H1N1 just seems too new of a vaccine and I don't trust it.)So especially since we decided not to vaccinate, we've been even more cautious then ever and I still caught a cold! It's frustrating because since I'm pregnant I can't take any medicine for it so I'm just eating a lot of fruit and lentils which are high in Vitamin C to help me get through it.
Since today is Thanksgiving, my family celebrates it every year at my grandmother's house. I considered not going if I didn't feel well, but by the end of the day I was feeling a bit better and we decided to go. What surprised me is that the hour-long drive down to Miami never bothers me, but now, at 8 months pregnant, it was soooo uncomfortable! Baby G was in my ribs the whole way down (which hurts really bad!) and my back and my pelvis were so sore by the time we got there!
I did enjoy seeing everyone and it was nice to see my grandmother and my mom and my cousins. Thanksgiving dinner was delicious - thankfully, despite the congestion, I could still taste it! Jorge and I enjoyed the company, the amazing food and then helped with clean up and then left at 8:30. We usually stay later, but the drive home is an hour and by then I'd be dead tired!
I was really happy we went down to see my family, but Jorge and I were talking about it on the way home - we don't think we'll be able to go down for Christmas. I really hate to miss Christmas because it's the most important holiday to my family, but I really think it's the best decision. Aside from the fact that it's a long drive for me and Baby G, at Christmas I'll be 38 weeks pregnant - only 2 weeks away from giving birth! And Miami is 2 hours away from the hospital we've decided to give birth at (in Boca Raton), so it wouldn't make sense do drive all the way down south and risk it. What if I went into labor early??!! We'll still have our mini-Christmas get together the next day at our place with Blanca, my mom and my dad though, so we'll still get to see them and celebrate. I'll miss my family but at the same time a nice, quiet holiday will be good too. I'm feeling so big that it's exhausting and I don't have a lot of energy for a big party. But we'll make the most out of it! And when Baby G gets here, I'm certain we'll be seeing my family again real soon!! :)
Here are a few pictures from Thanksgiving! A special thanks to my mom and my grandmother for preparing such a fantastic meal! We love you! Everything was delicious!

Baby This Week: 34 Weeks
Your baby now weighs about 4 3/4 pounds (like your average cantaloupe) and is almost 18 inches long. Her fat layers — which she'll need to regulate her body temperature once she's born — are filling her out, making her rounder. Her skin is also smoother than ever. Her central nervous system is maturing and her lungs are continuing to mature as well. If you've been nervous about preterm labor, you'll be happy to know that babies born between 34 and 37 weeks who have no other health problems generally do fine. They may need a short stay in the neonatal nursery and may have a few short-term health issues, but in the long run, they usually do as well as full-term babies.

Baby This Week: 33 weeks
This week your baby weighs a little over 4 pounds (heft a pineapple) and has passed the 17-inch mark. She's rapidly losing that wrinkled, alien look and her skeleton is hardening. The bones in her skull aren't fused together, which allows them to move and slightly overlap, thus making it easier for her to fit through the birth canal. These bones don't entirely fuse until early adulthood, so they can grow as her brain and other tissue expands during infancy and childhood.

Painting the Nursery
32 weeks, 1 day pregnant
This week, Jorge took a couple days off from work to paint the baby's room. I'm so excited to see the nursery start coming together! Right now it's an office/guest room and the walls are forest green. We'd decided to paint it a color called "Toasted Wheat" that is a cream/beige color. It will look great with the dark wooden furniture of the crib and dresser, as well as all the pink accents in the room. I can't wait to see it complete! It's been hard to get a chance to paint it, mostly because I shouldn't be around when he's painting because of the fumes. So he took a couple days off and Blanca came over to help. I was surprised that they got so much done in one day!! They did an awesome job!! I love how it's coming out!!!Here's a sneak peek at the progress!

Baby This Week: 32 weeks
By now, your baby weighs 3.75 pounds (pick up a large jicama) and is about 16.7 inches long, taking up a lot of space in your uterus. You're gaining about a pound a week and roughly half of that goes right to your baby. In fact, she'll gain a third to half of her birth weight during the next 7 weeks as she fattens up for survival outside the womb. She now has toenails, fingernails, and real hair (or at least respectable peach fuzz). Her skin is becoming soft and smooth as she plumps up in preparation for birth.

Bradley Classes
31 weeks, 4 days
These last few weeks have been quite eventful to say the least! When looking into childbirth classes a few weeks ago, I met a girl online on TheBump.com message boards who teaches Bradley Classes, which is a method of childbirth -- kinda like Lamaze. (Lamaze is one method and Bradley is another. Where Lamaze focuses on breathing, Bradley focuses on relaxation.) I read up on the classes and I was interested because they say they are focused on a "husband-coached childbirth" where the husband plays an active role in supporting the mom and where the husband learns a lot about what he can do to help the mom through labor. It sparked my interest. I thought it might help Jorge learn more about labor and birth... I didn't realize how much I'd be learning myself! I asked the girl about the classes and she sent me the curriculum... and I was really impressed! This would be a 12-week course, for 2 hours once a week. The hospital offered a course as well, but it was for only 4 weeks, 2 hours each class. How much could one possibly learn in such a short period of time?? The Bradley Classe seemed more in-depth, covering everything from nutrtion, to labor techniques, to breastfeeding and postpartum. The girl teaching the class even offered that we could just take the first 3 classes and if we liked them and decided to continue, that we could pay then. It was a good incentive. So Jorge and I went... and it totally changed our perspective on birth. We also started reading "The Husband-Coached Childbirth" by Dr. Robert Bradley. We have learned SO much. I feel so educated on my birth experience and what my options are as a patient... I don't just have to blindly follow the doctor's instructions. I know what questions I should ask so that I know what's going on and why, and if it's really the best for me and my baby. I feel so educated and empowered!! It's given me a whole new perspective on childbirth! I HIGHLY recommend this book and the Bradley classes. The only thing I regret is not learning about this earlier!
The class really focuses on natural childbirth and it has really motivated us to have that as our goal. We talked about our goals with our current OB and realized that neither her nor the hospital we were planning on going to were very natural-birth friendly. I did a ton of research and we started touring other hospitals in the area. I had a bunch of questions (you'd be surprised how very few questions people usually ask on these tours!) and the nurses were always impressed by everything I'd ask. We toured about 6 hospitals and one Birth Center, as well as doctors and midwives that delivered at those different places. Finally, we found one place that met all of our criteria. It's a bit further than what we would like (about 35 minutes away), but it's more important to us to have a hospital that we are comfortable with than to have it nearby.
A friend then told me about her friend that just gave birth at this hospital and said she loved her doctor. She sent me the link to their website and I saw they had OBs as well as certified nurse-midwives in their practice. (Now I know that when I first heard the term "midwife" my first thought was someone giving birth in a barn! Haha! But the more I've read up on it, I've learned that these midwives do everything an OB can do except perform C-sections. Since they don't perform surgeries, they are more likely to have more experience with natural births and really encourage them.) So I set up an appointment with one of the midwives, Terry, and I was really impressed with how she explained everything and really took her time to answer all my questions. Jorge really liked her too! She had plenty of experience with natural births and was very accomodating to all of my requests for my birth. She was above and beyond any of the others we interviewed, and even at the nurses at the hospital raved about her! So after careful consideration, Jorge and I decided to go with her. Changing care practicioners at 31 weeks was a huge decision, but Jorge and I are sure this is what is best for us and our baby. We feel much more at ease with Terry, she really listens to what we have to say and communicates our options with us, and that is very important. I really feel like I'm more than a number and that she really cares.
Last week I made it official. I called my old OB and transferred my medical records to the new midwife and tomorrow Jorge and I have our first appointment. So excited!!! Looking forward to telling you how it goes!
There's so much more that I could go into regarding the Bradley Method, but I know I won't do it justice. If you'd like more information on the it, check out this link: www.BradleyBirth.com.
If you're interested in taking the Bradley Class in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the classes are offered here: www.ourbeautifulbirth.com.
As I mentioned, I compiled a bunch of questions to ask at Hospital Tours, Birth Center Tours, OBGYN/Midwife Interviews, as well as Doula Interviews. You can download them by clicking on the links. I also put together my Birth Plan, in case you'd like to take a look. I did a ton of research putting these together. Hope they are useful for you!

Maternity Photos
31 weeks, 3 days pregnant
Two weeks ago, Jorge and I had a maternity photo shoot with Karyn Carbone of In Bloom Photography. We took some pictures at home, we walked around Las Olas, and we even went down to the beach. She was as sweet as could be and it was a pleasure spending time with her. We just got a teaser of some of the pictures and they came out fantastic! She really has a lot of talent! Jorge and I are thrilled!!

Baby This Week: 31 weeks
This week, your baby measures over 16 inches long. She weighs about 3.3 pounds (try carrying four navel oranges) and is heading into a growth spurt. She can turn her head from side to side, and her arms, legs, and body are beginning to plump out as needed fat accumulates underneath her skin. She's probably moving a lot, too, so you may have trouble sleeping because your baby's kicks and somersaults keep you up. Take comfort: All this moving is a sign that your baby is active and healthy.

Belly Picture: 30.5 Weeks
30 weeks, 3 days pregnant
So my belly button has popped out. Seemed to have happened almost overnight! One minute I was a flat little innie, next minute, my belly button exploded! I also have a bit of linea negra starting to show, where a line appears on the center of my belly. They say it goes away after the pregnancy. At the very least I am thankful I don't have any stretch marks yet! But shhhhhhh... I won't say that too loud! Don't want to jinx it!
